The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these six pillars of character.
I therefore agree:
∙ Verbal warning by the coach, and/or the chair of the Valley Ridge Soccer Club.
∙ Written warning.
∙ Parental game suspension with written documentation of incident kept on file by organizations involved.
∙ Game forfeit through the coach.
∙ Parental season suspension.

Valley Ridge Soccer Club Registration – 2019 Outdoor Season
VALLEY RIDGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP – Mandatory Fee
All families signing up for Valley Ridge Soccer must have a 2019 VRCA Membership; this fee can be
added to your registration fees prior to payment, or with registration. If you register two or more children in separate registration sessions, you will only purchase one VRCA Membership, as they are “per household”.
The Valley Ridge Community Association (VRCA) collects personal information for its own use; it does
not sell or otherwise distribute this information. Email notices regarding community events will be sent
to members from time to time. You will be given the option to opt in to this service (and out of it)at any time.
VALLEY RIDGE SOCCER REFUND POLICY
Refunds will be given prior to February 28th, 2019 subject to a $25 administration fee.
REFUNDS will be given after February 28th, 2019 subject to a $50 administration fee.
REFUNDS will not be given after April 16th, 2019.
Late registrations (April 1 thru April 15) will only be accepted if there is room on a team roster, and will
be subject to a $10 administration fee.
VRCA membership fees are not refunded when soccer registration is cancelled as community
membership fees enhance community spirit and go beyond the soccer program.
VALLEY RIDGE SOCCER WAIVER POLICY/ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RISK
I, the parent/guardian of the named player understand and accept the risks to the player through his or
her participation in activities associated with soccer, which may include the risk of serious and
permanent injury and potentially death. Therefore, in consideration of the Valley Ridge Soccer Club and
the Valley Ridge Community Association (VRSC and VRCA, respectively) permitting the player to
attend and participate in any of its activities, events or games, I, on behalf of and for the player, his or
her heirs, representatives, executors and administrators, do hereby release (each of the following being a ‘Released Party’) VRSC and VRCA, and all facility providers (such as gyms, soccer fields and soccer centers where an activity, event or game may take place) and all directors, officers, employees and
agents of such parties, from any and all claims, demands, damages and causes of action which may
arise out of or in connection with any loss, injury or damage to the player or their property which may
be suffered or incurred while attending or participating in (including transportation to and from) a VRSC
activity, event or game, regardless of whether or not such loss, injury or damage arose by reason of the
negligence of a Released Party. I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless all Released Parties
from any and all losses, claims, demands and damages that may be suffered or incurred by any
Released Party arising out of or in any way connected with the player’s attendance at or participation in
any such activity, event or game.

COACHING CODE OF ETHICS
The coach must act with integrity in performing all duties owed to athletes, the sport, and other members of the coaching profession and public.
The coach must strive to be well prepared and current in order that all duties in the respective discipline are fulfilled with competence.
The coach must act in the best interest of the athlete’s development as a whole person.
The coach must maintain the highest standards of personal conduct and support the principles of fair play.
Respect for the Rules
The coach must accept both the letter and the spirit of the rules that define and govern the sport.
Respect for Officials
The coach must accept the role of the officials in providing judgment to ensure that competitions are conducted fairly and according to the established rules.
Responsibility to Other Coaches
Courtesy, good faith and respect must characterize the coach’s conduct towards other coaches.
Always be Positive with Your Players.
Positive encouragement will produce more improvement and better results

Our organization is built on the commitment and dedication of volunteers. If everybody helps a little bit, we can run an excellent program.
To facilitate organization of the teams, we require co-coaches and team manager positions to be filled as soon as possible.
Please indicate if you would be interested in volunteering in one of these positions.
If you do not want to volunteer, please indicate below, and provide a $120 volunteer buyout fee. A volunteer deposit cheque will not be required. Your cheque will be cashed immediately.
All other volunteer positions will be selected on a first-come basis. A volunteer cheque for $120 will be required prior to the first soccer practice. Children will not be allowed to play until the volunteer deposit has been collected. These cheques will be destroyed if your volunteer commitment is fulfilled. Volunteering is mandatory when participating in the Valley Ridge Soccer Program.
A $120 volunteer cheque, dated for June 15th and payable to the VRCA, will be collected from all families prior to receiving your jersey on the first day of practice. It will NOT be cashed unless you fail to complete a 3hr volunteer option.
Please remember to bring your cheque with you. Until it is received, your child cannot play.
If you do not wish to volunteer, you can purchase a $120 buyout option online, or indicate that you wish your cheque to be cashed.
When you register your child, you will be asked for your top three volunteering choices. You will be placed in one of those choices that most meets the needs of the soccer program. You will be informed of your final position once the soccer teams have been made up for that season. Please do not indicate a volunteer position that you are unwilling to participate in. This is disruptive to the organization of the teams.
Volunteer Positions – SOCCER COMMITTEE
Soccer Committee Chair: Christa McKegney: Organizes the committee; recruits committee members; assigns tasks where appropriate; liaises with the City Parks Department and with the VRCA Board of Directors. Organizes teams and volunteer lists through the VRCA database.
Uniform Coordinator: Not Required in 2019: Order designated uniforms and coordinate distribution of the uniforms through Division Coordinators.
Coach Coordinator: Dori: Organize training for coaches and distribution of kits (balls, whistles, etc.). Correspond with coaches re: beginning and end of season procedures.
Volunteer Coordinator: VACANT: Organizes all volunteers. Works with event coordinators, the executive and team managers to cross-check parent volunteer effort.
Soccer Committee Members
Division Coordinators: VACANT (U4); Josh (U5/U6); Alyssa(U8/U10). Is a committee member and participates with planning prior to and during the season. Makes contact with team managers prior to season start, and assists as necessary throughout the season. Creates team schedules and assists with team setup. Assists with uniform distribution, distributes team lists and schedules, and communicates regularly with teams and the Soccer Committee. Should attend committee meetings whenever possible to assist with division planning.
Club Photo & Medal Coordinator: VACANT: Organize photographer for team photos and communicate with Division Coordinators re: procedures, dates, times. Distribute photos and end of season mementos to Division Coordinators.
Field Coordinator: VACANT Sets up field maps; arranges for seasonal field marking through Calgary West Soccer. Puts up soccer information board and updates with soccer schedules. Arranges for seasonal Port-o-Potty rental through the VRCA Board.
Equipment Kit Coordinator: Travis: Completes pre-season inventory and prepare kits for each team. Receive equipment from coaches at end of season. Take inventory – report to the committee any missing or broken equipment that will need to be replaced/repaired for next season.
BBQ Coordinator: VACANT: Works with the VRCA to organize the community/soccer BBQ. Coordinate volunteers and signage.
During the Season:
Team Managers: One per Team. Liaise with Division Coordinators and Coaches and/or Team families depending on the situation. Emails the team list and schedule to each team family. Reminds team of upcoming dates (i.e. Photo day, BBQ) and to visit website for information. Provides jersey numbers to the Division Coordinator. Often organizes the snack schedule, determined by the team. Assists with Photo Day and distributes picture packages to each family on their team. Works with the Jersey Coordinator to collect the $120 volunteer cheques on the first day of practice.
Jersey Coordinators: One per Team. Hands out jerseys at the beginning of practice. Collects them back at the end of practice. Washes them several times throughout the season and at the end of season. Hands uniforms back to the division coordinator. Collects the $120 volunteer cheque on the first day of practice before handing out the uniform.
Coaches: Two per team. Encouraged to take a coaching clinic prior to season start. Runs practices. Coordinates with Team Manager.
Community & Field Clean Up (3-4 hrs) – May 4, 2019. Start time 9 a.m.
Community BBQ & Activity Day – June 22, 2019 (rain-out date is September 7). Start time 7:30 am.
In coordination with the VRCA:

The website is a great source of information for coaches and parents. www.vrca.community
Please use it as a reference or direct parents there for additional info. If you have any suggestions, please forward them to us and we will be happy to make adjustments. When corresponding, please include your age group and jersey colour.
Uniforms will be distributed on the first day of the season. If your team has any questions about uniforms, the team manager should contact the division coordinator for direction. Coaches will receive a team matching jersey. Cleats are no longer mandatory across all divisions (but proper footwear is). Shin pads are mandatory.
**All uniforms will be retained by the VRCA to reduce waste and unnecessary costs. The team manager or Jersey coordinator (if there are enough volunteers) will collect all jerseys at the end of each practice. Shorts and Socks will no longer be provided.**
Will be distributed at the shed before your first game. Each kit, should have a ball for each player and coach, an air pump, whistle, cones, and a first aid kit. If you have any issues, please let me know and we will try and resolve them. We will be asking coaches to sign the kits back in at the end of the season to avoid clogging up your garages in the off season.
We sometimes have a large number of weather-related cancellations. At times, these cancellations were unnecessary as the weather does change quickly in Calgary. While a team can decide to cancel prior to game time, we highly recommend that this decision be made at the field, just in case the weather turns around. Heavy snow days are pretty obvious cancellation-worthy occasions. Coaches, please make contact with the opposition coach to get a better idea as to how you would like to proceed if you are unsure, or are not showing up. The website has our policy in greater detail, which you can direct parents to.
Also, for U4 teams, please note that Wednesday evenings are available from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m. and can be used to make up missed Monday field time. Since the U4 division only plays one night a week, the weather-related cancellations have a greater impact. It is advisable to have the younger kids bundled up, even with toques, in the early weeks given the chilly air.
Field Set Up
Let the parents know that it is appreciated when they can help set-up/tear down the nets (some teams have field set-up coincide with the snack schedule).
– U4 and U5 use larger pug nets.
– U6 and U8 use the smaller metal nets
– U10 use large nets

Generally 5 players + 1 goalie(rotation), your choice. U4 – No goalies.
The 2 teams coaches can decide pre-game how many players (with or without goalies) to play with, depending on the turn-out.
Having all players on the field is chaos at any age. However, coaches will be the best judge for the U4 game.
Outline for Game Days – U8, U10
20 mins practice
5 min break
35 min game
Generally – 5 players + goalie
U8 – 4 vs. 4 works well also!
Have one coach on the field/sidelines to help with flow and encouragement, while the 2nd coach/parent manages the bench for subs.
U4 – Just have fun. Try and get them to score on the proper net! Consider using more than one ball on the field to encourage more kids to play.
Throw-Ins – Should we be teaching this as early as U5?
From MVP Soccer: “It is part of the game and so the earlier it is introduced, the more confident the players will be when it becomes a requirement of the game’s rules. However the key consideration is to get the ball back into play and children playing. So if it is easier to play it in with the feet, then so be it.”
Throw-In Technique: When coaching throw-ins, the important consideration is to use two hands and bring the ball from behind the head in one fluid movement while keeping both feet on the floor. Just like being the goalie, each player will want to throw it in. Spread the love.
An idea for Goal/Corner Kicks – “As for goal kicks, our rule was that it didn’t matter who kicked it out behind the goal line, we made it a goalie kick which allowed us to pull players back and give the defending team a chance to regroup and bring the ball down the field.” It’s worth a try.
